The third annual Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) San Diego Breath of Hope Lung Cancer Walk is a 5k run/walk that brings together lung cancer survivors, patients, families, friends and caregivers.

The event is aimed at raising public awareness throughout the country about the very real dangers of lung cancer and most importantly, the common misconceptions about the cancer. Proceeds will benefit the LCA, a national non-profit organization that provides support and advocacy exclusively for the lung cancer community.

While lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., it receives the lowest amount of research dollars compared to any other cancer, primarily due to the incorrect assumption that lung cancer is the “smoking cancer.” In fact, more than 75 percent of lung cancer diagnoses today occur in former and never smokers.

Some of the potential causes of lung cancer are environmental toxins, such as asbestos. Asbestos was commonly used in building materials and other items through the 1970s, but has been linked to horrible asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma.

The San Diego Breath of Hope Lung Cancer Walk is the premiere lung cancer event/walk in Southern California. The even was started in 2009 by a group of local lung cancer survivors and advocates. Over the past two years, the walk has attracted more than 2,000 participants and raised nearly $300,000 for lung cancer.

The walk is set for Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Cancer Survivors Park at Spanish Landing in downtown San Diego. Registration begins at 7:00 a. and the walk begins at 9:00 a.m.
