Anesthesia is supposed to ensure that a patient does not feel pain during a medical procedure.  However, anesthesia is a very powerful and dangerous drug when improperly administered and can lead to pain, serious injury and even death.

According to a 2009 study in the medical journal Anesthesiology, there were more than 2,200 anesthesia deaths between 1999 and 2005. Anesthesia was found to be the underlying cause in about 34 deaths every year in the United States and a contributing factor in about 281 other deaths. A little over 46% of the deaths are caused by anesthesia overdose, with the other deaths attributed to different anesthesia complications.

One of the most alarming aspects of anesthesia errors is a phenomenon known as “Anesthesia Awareness.”  This happens when a patient is awake during surgery, experiencing pain, hearing conversations between doctors, but cannot communicate that they are aware of what is happening to them.  Before most surgeries involving general anesthetic, individuals are given a paralyzing drugs to keep them motionless during surgery.  As a result, when the anesthesia is not working they can do noting to alert the doctors..

Anesthesia awareness, brain damage or death can be avoided if the proper standard of medical care is used. However, notwithstanding the best efforts of doctors and nurses the most common injuries are caused due to:

  • Inadequate Drug Dosing
  • Poor Monitoring
  • Failure to Refill the Anesthetic Machine’s Vaporisers
  • Insufficient Training
  • Unfamiliarity with Techniques Used
  • Machine Misuse or Malfunction
