Safyral® Background

Safyral® (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol/levomefolate calcium and levomefolate calcium) is an oral contraceptive medication indicated for use by women to prevent pregnancy. It is also commonly used to increase folate levels in order to decrease the risk of certain birth defects in women who become pregnant while taking drospirenone-containing medications. Safyral® works by preventing ovulation, and may also change the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg.

Safyral® Side Effects

Although it has proven to be relatively effective as a contraceptive, Safyral® contains the hormone drospirenone, which has recently been linked to the following side effects:

  • Blood Clots
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Stroke
  • Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA)
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Heart Attack
  • Myocardial Infarction
  • Gallbladder Disease / Injury (cholecystitis)
  • Gallbladder Removal (cholecystectomy)
  • Death

Safyral® Blood Clot Risk

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) reported that the risk of developing blood clots was increased as much as two to three times simply by taking Safyral or other drospirenone-containing contraceptives. After receiving the study, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it would be investigating all drugs containing drospirenone to more closely analyze the blood clot risk. While it is known that all forms of birth control have been linked to an increased risk of blood clots, the new FDA review is going to focus specifically on the drospirenone that is most often found in Safyral, YAZ, Yasmin and Beyaz.
