The Dangers of Cold Therapy

In April, 2004 a case study was published in the American Journal of Pain Management revealing the side effects experienced by a patient who had undergone prolonged and repetitive application of ice, which is also known as cryotherapy.

The harmful side effects of cold therapy machines may include hand or foot amputation, limb loss, chronic nerve conditions of the arms and legs, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

In 2008, the FDA issued a Patient Safety Advisory and Class A Recall “to remind users of the risk of cold induced injuries and recommend important safety precautions for BREG Polar Care products.” Other manufacturers of these types of devices include DonJoy, EBIce and Breg Polar Care.

The damage resulting from the use of these devices may be permanent, painful and costly.

Signs and Symptoms

Prolonged exposure to cold therapy units may cause skin damage, permanent nerve damage, and chronic pain resulting in:

• Skin damage
• Nerve damage
• Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
• Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
• Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS)
• Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
• Shoulder-Hand Syndrome
• Causalgia
• Sudeck’s Atrophy
