What is Mirena?

The Mirena Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a small plastic device manufactured by Bayer (the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin), which is inserted into a woman’s uterus to prevent pregnancy for up to five years. The T-shaped device works by releases a continuous low dose of levonorgestrel hormone into the uterus to prevent the user from becoming pregnant.   The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Mirena IUD in 2000 as a contraceptive, and in 2009 for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding.  Shortly after that expansion of the FDA approval, the FDA required Bayer to immediately cease  dissemination of false and misleading advertising of the Mirena IUD, which allegedly included overstating Mirena’s efficacy and minimizing its risks.

Side Effects of Mirena

There have been numerous serious injuries alleged to have been caused by Mirena IUDs.  These include:

  • perforation of the uterus;
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease;
  • erosion of adjacent areas such as the vagina;
  • ectopic pregnancy;
  • embedment in the uterus;
  • scarring and adhesions; and
  • complications that may result in surgery for removal of device.

These injuries can lead to serious and lasting damage and should be discussed with your doctor immediately.  If you have had a Mirena IUD implanted and you have had a Mirena removal surgery, a Mirena perforation of the uterus, a Mirena ectopic pregnancy or other Mirena side effects, you have the option of pursuing a Mirena Lawsuit.  Mirena Lawyers can advise you of your legal options.
